HK Hiking. Try To Keep Up.

I came down to Hong Kong on Saturday afternoon. I've got some meetings in the office Monday morning, and I'm flying back to the US on Wednesday. With not a whole lot to do in GZ, I called my friend Dave and took the train down. Saturday night was very tame, just going out for some excellent Mexican food and a couple of beers, before turning in around 11pm. We had wanted to go hiking Sunday morning, but it was rainy and cloudy and pretty craptastic. We headed out to Kowloon to get fitted for some shirt and trousers instead, and grab some lunch. After lunch, the plan had changed to just lay low, but we figured why? Why not check out the trail. So on the KTR we got.

Dave has a book dedicated to hiking trails in Hong Kong. The trail we selected was the Ng Tung Chai trail, in the New Territories. The book describes it as a family hike. We did see one family hiking it, but we thought it was relatively difficult. Not as steep as the Peak climb, but not paved, and very narrow and slippery steps. To get there was almost a story in and of itself. First we took the MTR to Kowloon. Then hop on the KCR to the Tai Wo station. Here, you can either grab the 64K bus, or a taxi. We opted for taxi. The small village is on a narrow, winding road, where we were dropped off without a clue! Fortunately, a little old lady recognized what we probably were looking for, and pointed us thru a small alley (like 2 feet wide) and up a little path. That was the beginning.
The first thing along the trail is actually a small temple, with a tiny fall near it.
I thought that waterfall was pretty cool. Man, was I in for a shock.
Not a sign to be taken lightly. It's a well marked trail, but it's not a stroll in the park, that's for sure.

The trail splits into two forks, one has the Bottom, Middle, and Main falls, and the other fork has the Straggling Hair falls. We chose the first path.

After walking all that for an hour, we are rewarded with our first sight; the Bottom Falls.
Dave's camera is more advanced than mine, or at least less broken. So he was able to capture a few movies of the falls too.

Hiking up from the Bottom Falls, one comes naturally to the Middle Falls.
The middle fall was more impressive than the bottom. What would the main fall bring? Well, start climbing again. For this part was the least accessible. But the views were well worth it.
Look how clear the water is! And it taste great. (And was less filling).

Well, that's it for Hong Kong. Don't think I'll get any more exploring before I head back to the States. Hope you enjoyed the hike!
